Structured Data Recommendations from Google and Schema.org       

A Search Off Record episode published by Google discussed the structured data.       

They discussed how Google might exploit structured data in ways that go beyond what Google’s developer guidelines advocate.             

Schema.org is a collaborative community effort to create, maintain, and promote structured data schemas for the Internet, web pages, emails, and other places. Founders of Schema.org are companies like Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Yandex. Marketers and website developers may easily engage in this project because of a shared vocabulary in the form of schema.org types and properties.                

The relevant part of the episode conducted by schema.org started when Lizzi Sassman, a tech writer on Google’s Search Relations team, saw that Schema.org’s structured data documentation was more extensive than Google’s developer help pages.                 

Google’s structured data suggestions use only a tiny portion of the structured data specified at Schema.org.

There are numerous applications for structured data that go beyond what Google recommends. According to what Google provided in this podcast, Google can use some of that extra non-recommended structured data that isn’t on the books in terms of what Google recommends.

Use of Structured Data by Google     

They went on to say that while the recommendations on Google’s developer pages are limited, Google may employ structured data that goes beyond their recommendations.       

It’s vital to note that Google’s structured data recommendations are to make it easier for Google to recognize which photos to show rich results and which data to use in that context, essentially assisting publishers in obtaining rich results.       

The Googlers then talked about how structured data can help Google determine what a page is about.             

This application goes beyond what Google recommends for displaying rich results, and it’s something that John Mueller has already mentioned.      

However, this additional use of structured data is not recorded.
